For several months, the main security issue of mother Europe is a big wave of refugees pouring into the continent via the Mediterranean and Turkey from wave-torn Syria and Iraq. Through the Turkish direction, the majority of immigrants come to Greece, although a certain portion crosses the Bulgarian border. According to the migration service as of January, Bulgaria had already asked for asylum more than 4,500 Syrian refugees and the end of the year this figure may increase to 12000.
Reacting to the situation, in October the Bulgarian government held an emergency meeting on the issue of mass influx of migrants from Syria. They discussed measures to normalize the situation and protect the country from illegals. The priorities of the state in this direction is the development and implementation of integration programmes for refugees who plan to stay in Bulgaria. At the moment developed a complex of measures to stabilize the situation of migrants. Decided and preparations are underway for the construction of a 30-kilometer fence on the most vulnerable part of the border crossing point East of forest sod soils. Among the steps being taken – the equipment of the refugee camps of closed type, which currently can accommodate around 2000 people.
The total number of refugees at the moment in Bulgaria, while very little to have any noticeable impact on the social or economic situation in the country. At least, foreign citizens bought property in sea resorts in Bulgaria, is unlikely to feel the negative effect of this phenomenon in the foreseeable future.
