Cape Kaliakra - a North shore gem

On the North coast of Bulgaria is a place of extraordinary beauty - Cape Kaliakra. What is it? What is the meaning of his name? What is known about this Cape from history? Than Kaliakra interesting for tourists?

Geographic features

Cape Kaliakra is a small elongated Peninsula, extending into the sea at 2 000 meters. This place not only is one of the biggest attractions of the country. The area of the Cape is a natural and archeological reserve.

The shores of the Peninsula are magnificent cliffs. Their height is 70 meters. At rock they found a large quantity of iron oxides. That is why the Cape seems a red spot against the blue sea. This Cape also serves as weather protection for the Bay, located just South.

Cape Kaliakra has also become a reliable home to some wildlife, for example, cormorants. In the waters surrounding the Peninsula, you can often see dolphins. Those who have decided to rent apartments in Bulgaria to enjoy nature, you must visit this place.

The name and history

What does the name “Kaliakra”? This word has Greek roots. The first part of “Kali” means “beautiful”, the second “acre” means “Cape”. But in various historical sources, this place is called differently. Famous names such as Cirisis, acre, Castelum, Gelare and others.

The first settlement on the Peninsula in the 4th century BC. Over the centuries, the small settlement became an important political and religious center of the black sea region. The area was called Cirisis. According to historical writings of Strabo fortress Cirisis entered into possession of the receiver of Alexander the great - king Lysimachus. Later, when the Dobrudja Principality headed Dobrotitsa, Cape Kaliakra was considered the capital.

This place is also noteworthy in that witnessed the historic Russo-Turkish battle in which the victory was won by Admiral Ushakov.

Tourist information

Near the Kaliakra Peninsula are Bulgarian settlements Kavarna (12 km) and Varna (60 km), which can be found on the map of Bulgaria on our site.

Of the attractions at the Cape are:

  • the obelisk Gate forty maidens”;
  • monument to Fyodor Ushakov;
  • lighthouse 1901;
  • the reconstructed fortress gates.

Tourists will also be interested to visit some caves, which offer a beautiful sea view. In two caves are also located��Yong Museum and a restaurant. On the Kaliakra also built a weather station.
