In 2017, the UNESCO World Heritage List could be expanded to include ancient beech forests in Bulgaria’s Central Balkan National Park.
Bulgaria contains Europe’s largest beech forest area, covering 260 km². Almost three quarters of the trees are over 100 years old. Trees older than 150 years cover 140 km², while some rare specimens are over 240 years old.
The UNESCO World Heritage List already includes many Bulgarian landmarks, such as the Madara Rider, a Thracian tomb, Boyana Church, Rila Monastery and Pirin National Park.
With tourist flows to Bulgaria remaining strong, the government is investing heavily in modern infrastructure, increasing the appeal of investment in Bulgarian property.
