According to Housing Review 2015, a study of housing conditions in different countries, Bulgarian households spend 28% of their budgets on property-related needs. These include utilities, rent and repairs to residential premises. The European average is 22%.
The report also contains information about housing ownership in Bulgaria. Around 97% of the country’s housing stock is privately owned, while 3% belongs to the state. More than two thirds of Bulgaria’s residents own their homes. This is a high figure compared, for example, with Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden, where the figure does not exceed 10%. However, despite owning their homes, almost half of Bulgarian families live on the poverty line.
