The EU interior ministers’ meeting scheduled for October 2015 will not discuss admitting Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area. Bulgarian broadcaster BNR reports that other issues will be on the agenda, notably the growing refugee flow and measures to strengthen border security.
Bulgaria and Romania have long sought full participation in the Schengen agreement. Their admission has been discussed for several years. No positive decision has been reached because Germany and several other EU member states disagree. Reasons cited include high corruption and insufficient action against organised crime.
The next meeting expected to consider Bulgarian and Romanian Schengen membership will take place in December this year.
