Bulgaria’s Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova said that around €1 billion had been invested in the country’s road infrastructure over the five years up to 2013. The investments are part of the state Transport programme.
During the programme, more than 300 km of motorways and ring roads were built in Bulgaria, and substantial sections of older roads were restored.
Under the new road infrastructure development strategy for 2014–2022, the government’s main priorities are completing the Struma and Hemus motorways and the tunnel under Shipka. By 2020, it plans to build more than 600 km of new roads and repair over 17,000 km of roads of all classes.
In addition to new roads, the strategy includes greater road safety, integration of Bulgaria’s road system into the European network and development of other infrastructure elements.
