Food prices in Bulgaria are among Europe’s most affordable, but wholesale prices rose from early July to late August this year. In August, for example, greenhouse cucumber prices doubled, while peaches and apples became 7–10% more expensive. Chicken, pork, white brined cheese and yellow cheese also rose by 1%.
Last week, however, wholesale food prices began to fall. Greenhouse cucumbers fell by 38.1% and apples by 6.2%. Rice and beans became 0.5% and 0.3% cheaper, respectively, while sausage prices fell by 1.3%. Some foods still rose in price: peaches by 7%, cabbage by 13.3% and tomatoes by 17.1%.
