Kindergartens in Bulgaria

Families spending time in Bulgaria often need to understand how preschool enrolment works. This guide covers the main questions for residents, property owners and longer-term visitors:

  • Which institution to choose: public or private?
  • What fees and additional costs may apply?
  • Are Russian-language activities or Russian-speaking staff available on the Black Sea coast?

Kindergarten Fees in Bulgaria

Fees depend on the municipality, residence status, provider and selected services. The figures below are historical and must be checked before applying.

  • Public Kindergartens: Tuition policy and meal charges vary by municipality and eligibility. Do not rely on the old BGN figures in the original article.
  • Private Kindergartens: Private fees vary widely. Ask whether meals, transport, extended hours, activities and deposits are included, and read the cancellation and notice terms.

Public and Private Kindergartens

Licensed public and private kindergartens must meet Bulgarian education and safety requirements. Verify the institution's current registration and programme.

Private providers may offer additional activities such as:

  • Foreign languages, including English, Russian or German;
  • Music and art;
  • Yoga, dance or gymnastics.

Some private kindergartens have smaller groups, newer facilities or visiting teachers, but quality and cost vary by provider.

Can a Foreign Child Attend a Public Kindergarten?

Municipal kindergartens can have waiting lists. Eligibility and ranking depend on the municipality, the child's address, the family's status and local criteria. Applicants without eligible residence status may have fewer options, but the official rules should be checked for the relevant municipality.

Tip: Apply through the municipality's official system and keep copies of every document. Do not rely on personal contacts or informal promises.

Typical Documents

  • Completed application;
  • A copy of the birth certificate of the child;
  • The provider's enrolment agreement;
  • The child's information or health record;
  • A medical certificate.

Medical documents may include:

  • The child's vaccination record;
  • A statement from the family doctor;
  • Recent medical or laboratory results where required. Exact tests and validity periods must be confirmed with the kindergarten and municipality.

Private Kindergarten Examples

Bulgarian is the main language in most preschools. Some private providers employ Russian-speaking staff or offer Russian-language activities.

Russian-speaking staff may ease initial communication, but also consider the child's access to Bulgarian-language support and the overall educational environment.

The original article listed the following providers. Confirm that they still operate and that the stated language support is current:

  • "Morsko Konche" (Varna) – site (http://www.abc-varna.com/ru/)
  • "The little Prince" (Varna) – site (http://www.thelittleprinceschool.com/kg)

If you are planning to buy an apartment and move to Bulgaria, BolgarskiyDom can help you compare areas near schools and kindergartens. Parents should assess and enrol with the educational institution directly.
