Life Insurance in Bulgaria

Life insurance can provide a benefit if the insured person dies or if another event covered by the policy occurs. The insurer pays only when the claim meets the contract terms, exclusions and notification requirements.

Bulgarian insurers may offer policies to citizens, residents and some temporary visitors. Eligibility depends on residence status, age, health and the insurer's underwriting rules.

Applicants normally complete a declaration and provide identity and residence documents. A medical questionnaire, examination or local medical report may also be required.

Types of Life Insurance in Bulgaria

There are two types of life insurance:

  • Term life insurance;
  • Endowment or savings-linked life insurance.

Minimum and maximum entry ages, medical requirements and premiums vary by provider and product. Older applicants may face higher premiums, lower coverage limits or fewer available policies.

Endowment Insurance combines life cover with a savings element. The policyholder pays regular or single premiums, part of which may build a maturity value. It is not the same as a bank deposit, and returns, fees and surrender terms must be checked carefully.

At maturity, the policy may pay a stated or investment-linked amount, subject to the contract. If a covered event occurs earlier, the named beneficiary may receive the insured benefit. Products for children are also available from some insurers.

Important: Bulgarian tax residents may be eligible for tax relief on qualifying life-insurance contributions. Conditions and limits change, so confirm the current rules with the National Revenue Agency or a tax adviser.

How to Choose an Insurer in Bulgaria

Before buying, check that the insurer is licensed, read the exclusions and claims procedure, and compare the financial terms. The companies below are examples of established Bulgarian-market insurers, not a current ranking:

  • DZI - General Insurance EAD
  • Armeec AD
  • Bulstrad Vienna Insurance Group AD
  • Lev Ins AD
  • Allianz Bulgaria AD

Customer reviews can be useful, but also compare licensing, solvency information, policy wording, fees and complaint handling.
