Short answer
Demand for an occupation does not by itself guarantee employment. A realistic opportunity depends on four things together: fresh vacancies for the exact role and location, working language, recognition for a regulated profession and the candidate's lawful access to work. Compare specific vacancies and applicant requirements, not sector names alone.
A sector can have many vacancies and still be a poor match for one applicant. A suitable role must exist in the chosen region, use a language the applicant can work in, accept or recognise the applicant's qualification, and be legally open to that person's status.
This guide turns the old ‘top professions’ format into a repeatable job-search workflow. It does not publish old salaries as current, predict hiring or promise that a vacancy will lead to a permit or residence status.
The four filters for a realistic shortlist
Apply the filters in parallel. Strong demand does not remove a language requirement. Recognition of a diploma does not create work authorisation. A right to work does not prove that the employer is hiring for the applicant's experience level.
| Filter | Evidence to collect | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Demand | Active vacancies for the same role, level, region and observation date | That the market will remain the same or that the applicant will be selected |
| Language | Language named in the vacancy, workplace use and evidence expected by the employer or regulator | That a foreign-language role has no Bulgarian-language tasks |
| Qualification recognition | Whether the occupation is regulated, which qualification is relied on and which authority handles recognition | That a translated diploma is automatically recognised |
| Work authorisation | Nationality, current status, proposed role and the official procedure applicable to that combination | That an offer, company invitation or residence document automatically permits the work |
Start with the applicant's legal route
Before applying widely, record nationality, current document, place of residence and the intended employment relationship. The official route may differ for an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen, a third-country national, a family member and a person under temporary protection.
| Applicant or status | First check | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| EU, EEA or Swiss citizen | Use the official mobility and residence-document route for this group and confirm employment formalities | Do not copy a third-country work-authorisation sequence |
| Third-country national | Check the specific employment and migration route for the proposed role and applicant | A vacancy or employment contract alone does not establish permission to enter, reside or work |
| Family member | Confirm the applicant's own nationality, document and relationship to the person they accompany or join | One family member's status does not automatically answer another's work question |
| Person with temporary protection | Check the current protection document and the official employment rules attached to that regime | Temporary protection is not Visa D or an ordinary residence route |
The Employment Agency and the Migration Directorate are official starting points for different parts of this check. Ask which procedure applies before accepting costs, leaving another job or planning a move.
Archive of 31 December 2021: five sectors

The original article called its selection a top five after reviewing vacancy websites. It covered IT, healthcare, sales, education and industry or skilled trades. That is preserved as the page's dated editorial snapshot, not as a current national ranking.
| Archived sector | Roles or themes named in 2021 | Current verification task |
|---|---|---|
| IT | Developers, DevOps, system administration, security, QA, project management and UI or UX design | Compare the same technology, seniority, location, language and employment format on one observation date |
| Healthcare | Doctors, pharmacists, nurses, laboratory staff and a broad set of medical specialties | Check active regional vacancies, regulated-profession recognition, language and authorisation separately |
| Sales | Sales representatives, sales managers, retail department heads, consultants, analysts and marketers | Separate retail, business-to-business, field and digital roles and record language and target-market requirements |
| Education | Preschool, higher education and teachers of English, German, Spanish and French | Check institution type, subject, learner group, qualification requirement and teaching language |
| Industry and skilled trades | Mechanics, electricians, plumbers, welders, turners, sewing workers and engineers | Check site, shift pattern, safety credentials, qualification recognition and the exact contract |
The archived page also contained 2021 vacancy counts, a forecast for IT jobs, regional claims about medical shortages and salary examples. Those numbers are not reused as current market facts or pay benchmarks.
Filter 1: measure demand without claiming a national ranking
Demand must be defined. ‘IT is in demand’ is too broad to guide an application. A useful comparison names the occupation, seniority, technology or specialty, municipality or region, working arrangement and observation date.
- 1Define one role. Use the same title family and exclude unrelated seniority levels.
- 2Define one geography. Separate Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, another region and remote roles where the vacancy allows it.
- 3Collect active examples. Use the Employment Agency, EURES and current private listings, recording the URL and date.
- 4Remove duplicates and stale posts. The same vacancy may appear on several sites or remain visible after recruitment changes.
- 5Record repeated requirements. Count language, experience, qualification, shift, licence and work-status conditions.
- 6Repeat on a later date. A single search is a snapshot, not a trend.
NSI and Eurostat provide aggregate labour-market context. Use their definitions and reference periods, but do not treat an aggregate employment series as a list of vacancies for one occupation.
Filter 2: identify the actual working language

Record the language required for application, interview, daily work, safety instructions, customer contact, documentation and any professional examination. These can be different. A role serving an international market may still require Bulgarian for internal administration or local clients.
- The vacancy language and the workplace language are recorded separately.
- The required level is stated by the employer or competent authority, not guessed from the job title.
- Customer, documentation, safety and team communication are included.
- A certificate is obtained only after confirming which evidence is accepted.
Filter 3: check qualification recognition before translating everything
First ask whether the occupation is regulated and whether formal recognition is required for the intended function. Then identify the competent authority. NACID is an official starting point for information on academic recognition and professional qualifications, but the exact route depends on the qualification and occupation.
Create a document map with the qualification title, awarding institution, country, study period, transcript or curriculum, professional experience, name differences, translations and certifications. Do not pay to legalise an entire file before the receiving authority confirms what it needs.
For a non-regulated role, an employer may still assess education and experience. Employer acceptance and formal state recognition are different questions and should be recorded separately.
Filter 4: verify the right to work in this job
Keep the employment offer, work-authorisation process, entry document and residence procedure as separate items. They may depend on one another, but one does not automatically replace another. Use the Employment Agency and Migration Directorate to identify the current route for the applicant and proposed role.
The 2021 article made broad claims that certain residence grounds prevented salaried work. Those statements are not republished as current rules. Work rights must be checked against the person's exact status, document and activity.
The archived job-search skeleton, rebuilt for today
The dated article suggested the Employment Agency and the private portals Rabota, Jobs.bg, JobTiger and Zaplata. This remains a useful multi-source search skeleton, but it does not establish that every site, category or vacancy is current or official.
- 1Start with official sources. Search the Employment Agency and EURES for the role and region.
- 2Add private portals. Search the same role with the same filters and record the source.
- 3Check the employer. Confirm the legal employer name, its own vacancy page and a contact channel.
- 4Build a comparison set. Keep roles of the same level, location, language and contract type together.
- 5Confirm status before applying. Ask whether the vacancy is still open and whether applicants with the stated work status are considered.
- 6Keep evidence. Save the advertisement, date, correspondence and proposed terms.
Compare the whole offer, not an old salary
The 2021 medical salary examples cannot be used as current pay expectations. For each current offer, record whether the amount is gross or net, currency, pay period, guaranteed and variable components, working time, overtime, shifts, probation, paid leave, location and remote-work conditions.
Add relocation costs, commuting, accommodation, professional recognition, translations and any gap before work can legally begin. A higher nominal figure can produce a weaker practical result if hours, housing or authorisation costs differ.
Questions for the employer before accepting
- What is the legal employer name and exact workplace?
- Which duties, level and reporting line belong to the role?
- Which languages are used for customers, documents, safety and the team?
- Is formal qualification recognition required, and by which authority?
- Which work-authorisation route does the employer expect, and who handles each step?
- What are the written gross terms, hours, shifts, variable pay and probation conditions?
- Is the vacancy current, and when will written terms be issued?
Keep the job decision separate from the property decision
A job search may influence where to live, but a vacancy should not be used as proof of stable income before the employment and authorisation steps are complete. Likewise, buying or renting a home does not prove a right to work.
Build the job file first: role, employer, language, qualification, authorisation and written terms. Then compare housing within a realistic commuting area and budget. Preserve a fallback if the start date, workplace or legal route changes.
Official verification routes
- Bulgarian Employment Agency: official starting point for employment services, vacancy search and applicable labour-market procedures.
- EURES: European job-mobility route for vacancies and living and working information.
- National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria and Eurostat Data Browser: aggregate labour-market context with stated definitions and periods.
- Bulgarian Ministry of Interior, Migration Directorate: official route for the migration status and residence side of a proposed employment plan.
- NACID: official starting point for academic recognition and professional-qualification questions.
These sources do not guarantee that one occupation is in demand, that a qualification will be recognised, or that a person may work in a particular role. Use the relevant procedure and retain its access date.
