According to Bulgarian Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova, the 2016 tourism season was the best in 25 years. Both foreign visitor numbers and tourism revenue significantly exceeded the results of 2014, previously the most successful year.
In June and July, foreign visitor numbers grew by 23.1% compared with the previous year, while tourism revenue increased by 14% over the same period.
From January to July, revenue increased by 13-14% annually and by 14% compared with 2014.
Germany recorded the largest increase in visitor numbers at +38%, while Russian visitors increased by 30%. Romanian citizens also travelled to Bulgaria more often.
The statistics show that forecasts for Bulgaria's tourism sector made at the start of the year were fully realised.
