According to R. Draganov, director of Bulgaria's Institute for Tourism Analysis and Assessment, more than 10 million tourists will visit Bulgaria this seaside season: an estimated 5.6 million Bulgarians and 4.7 million foreigners.
Although Bulgarian resorts can accommodate up to 1.5 million guests simultaneously, the season started modestly. Experts link empty hotel rooms in May, June and early July to cool weather and the ongoing European Football Championship, ending on 10 July.
Despite the weak start, almost all Bulgarian tour operators confirmed higher bookings for the second half of July and August. Many recorded growth of 35-60% compared with the corresponding period of 2015.
Draganov attributes the increase to geopolitical factors, particularly deteriorating security in Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia. He says it is unrelated to improved service quality at Bulgarian resorts.
