According to Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova, a record 8 million tourists will visit Bulgaria in 2016, 800 thousand more than the population of this Balkan country.
Compared with 2015, foreign visitor numbers are forecast to increase by 700 thousand, or +9.6%, this year. Compared with 2014, the increase will be 800 thousand, or +11.1%.
Rumen Draganov, head of the Institute for Tourism Analysis and Assessment, says further growth requires actively promoting Bulgaria as a year-round holiday destination. Winter resorts must be developed alongside luxury spa and golf tourism, which attract affluent visitors and generate higher revenue.
Draganov also says Bulgaria needs five modern airports capable of handling regular charter flights and attracting European low-cost airlines.
